3'-nucleotidase/nuclease activity allows Leishmania parasites to escape killing by neutrophil extracellular traps.

Leishmaniasis is a widespread neglected tropical disease caused by parasites of the Leishmania genus. These parasites express the enzyme 3'-nucleotidase/nuclease (3'NT/NU), which has been described to be involved in parasite nutrition and infection. Bacteria that express nucleases escape the toxic effects of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). Hence, we investigated the role of 3'NT/NU in Le...

Characterization of Rv0888, a Novel Extracellular Nuclease from Mycobacterium tuberculosis

Bacterial extracellular nucleases play important roles in virulence, biofilm formation, utilization of extracellular DNA as a nutrient, and degradation of neutrophil DNA extracellular traps. However, there is no current data available for extracellular nucleases derived from M. tuberculosis. Herein, we have identified and characterized Rv0888, an extracellular nuclease in M. tuberculosis. The p...

Identification of Lactobacillus plantarum in Breast Milk

Backgrounds : The role of potentially probiotic lactic acid bacteria of human milk   in  the  early  colonization and protection of infant against infections is the subject of increasing researches. Colonization with Lactobacillus plantarum in early infancy is suggested to be important for health in later life. However, we presently investigated the strain of Lactobacil...

Cellobiose Dehydrogenase Production by the Genus Cladosporium

Cellobiose dehydrogenase (CDH EC.1.1.5.1) is an extracellular enzyme that mainly produced by wood-degrading fungi. It oxidizes cellobiose to cellobionolactone using a wide spectrum of electron acceptors. The key roles of CDH in growth, metabolism, and some other important cellular processes such as cellulose degradation in fungi have been noted. Since the demands for finding new sources of CDH ...

The complete genomes of Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus johnsonii reveal extensive differences in chromosome organization and gene content.

The first comprehensive comparative analysis of lactobacilli was done by comparing the genomes of Lactobacillus plantarum (3.3 Mb) and Lactobacillus johnsonii (2.0 Mb). L. johnsonii is predominantly found in the gastrointestinal tract, while L. plantarum is also found on plants and plant-derived material, and is used in a variety of industrial fermentations. The L. plantarum and L. johnsonii ch...
